We are going to let 1/2 ton trucks pulling up to 21 ft wheel houses starting tomorrow. 3/4 ton trucks can drive out not pulling wheel houses. The road still goes out about 6 1/2 miles past pine island, Our road is marked with orange plastic highway construction markers. There is 15 to 18 inches of ice in the lake around where our road goes. I do not know what is way to the east or west of our road. I have heard some reports of less ice in other areas.
Adrian’s Fishing Reports
We are now letting 1/2 ton trucks drive out not pulling wheel houses. The road goes out 6 miles past pine island. I will check the ice tomorrow and give you another report and what we will be allowing out for the weekend,
Yesterday in the bay we had 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 inches of ice along side the trail. The lake is more like 11 to 14 inches of ice. I did not check the lake much because we have to drive across the bay to get to the lake. We are allowing small to mid size vehicles to drive out not pulling wheel houses. We are allowing wheel houses up to 16 feet long to be pulled out behind atvs or utvs. No full size vehicle!
We have not been making ice very fast. Today in the bay there was 7 3/4 to 9 inches of ice. In the lake there was 9 3/4 to 11 3/4 inches of ice. We have cold weather moving in tonight so we should start making some ice a little faster. With the cool down we will get some cracks on the trails so be careful out there the next two days. After that I will check the ice again and decide if we will start letting some wheel houses go out behind atvs. Hopefully we will be able to but no guarantees.
We have a trail marked across the bay for atvs and snowmobiles. The thinnest ice on the trail in the bay is 7 inches. There is still very thin ice in places in the bay so stay close to the trail if you go out. We are fishing our first houses tomorrow out in the lake. I did not check much in the lake this time but out in front of the island where we cross is around 8 to 10 inches of ice.
Going across the bay today there was 4 to 5 inches of ice. There are still some open holes in the normal early ice spots. Out in the lake there was 6 to 6 1/2 inches of ice out in front of where we cross pine island. I went out two miles from pine island and did not see any bad spots. We are suppose to get snow tomorrow. Hopefully we do not get very much. I will decide after that if I will mark a trail across the bay yet. The first people fishing out over pine island was today. They got their limits but we should wait a couple more days for safety purposes. I will let you know when I know more.
The cool down from our warm spell did not cause any cracks on the roads. We are now letting up to 3/4 ton trucks pulling up to 22 ft long wheel houses. The ice is the same thickness as a week ago but we will start making more now. Good luck fishing
Today in the bay there was 15 to 16 inches of ice. On the lake there was 16 to 18 inches of ice. We are letting half ton vehicles drive out not pulling wheel houses. Wheel houses can be pulled out by smaller vehicles or atv’s. We are going to leave it this way through the weekend. The road is plowed four miles past Pine Island. Good luck fishing!
Today in the bay there was 12 to 14 inches of ice. In the lake there was 13 to 15 inches. Those last open spots from when the ice shifted had 10 inches at the least. we are opening the road to anything less than full size vehicles not pulling wheel houses. (a half ton truck is a full size vehicle) no full size vehicles. We are allowing wheel houses to be pulled out by atv or utv up to 20 feet long but keep in mind that it is a little bumpy out in the lake.
The road remains to be in good condition. Last night just before dark the pressure ridge blew up. We had a lot of cars backed up until we got the bridge back into place. Everyone made it off okay. The bridge is in 3 feet of water just over pine island. I have not had a chance to check any more ice depths but Brian from Lake Road Lodge checked the road in the bay today with a 20 inch chain saw and could not get through. We are going to have a 60 degree temperature change from yesterday till tonight. Everybody should be very cautious for the next 24 hours no matter what lake or where you are fishing. The ice will have to shrink from the temperature change causing cracks to open and there may be cracks on some of the roads. Please pay close attention to the ice in front of you while you are driving. The resorts will try to keep an eye on the roads and mark any bad spots but this time of year the ice conditions can change fast. Everybody stay safe and use extra caution. Good luck fishing!
